ROOT CANAL – HOMECARE INSTRUCTIONS

You’ve just had a root canal and received your temporary restoration – Now what?

CHEWING & EATING WITH YOUR TEMPORARY RESTORATION

Avoid chewing for at least 30 minutes to allow the restoration to harden.
Avoid hard or sticky foods like chewing gum, candy or nuts.
When possible, chew on the opposite side of your mouth away from the temporary.
Avoid chewing until the anesthetic has worn off. Your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours.
It is not a problem for a small portion of a temporary filling to wear away or break off, but if the entire filling wears out or if the temporary falls off, call us so that it can be replaced.

MEDICATIONS & DISCOMFORT

If antibiotics were prescribed, remember to take them for the full indicated time, even if the symptoms improve.

It is normal to experience some discomfort for several days after a root canal appointment, especially when chewing.
Rinse mouth with warm salt water three times a day to reduce discomfort and swelling. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt per glass of warm water.

WHEN TO CALL US?

Call our office if your bite feels uneven, have sensitivity or discomfort that increases or lasts longer than three or four days. Also call if your temporary crown comes off. We can be reached at 440.461.9600.
